Joviah Nabir Yo
Nabiryo who goes as Nabir Yo on my social (b. 2002, Mpigi, Uganda) is a multidisciplinary artist managed by Amasaka Gallery. Her practice blends performance, fashion, and painting, resulting in large-scale wall hangings and installations. Inspired by childhood memories of her grandmother knitting and embroidering, she fuses art and fashion, moving away from Western aesthetics by using locally sourced materials. Through collage, quilting, and backcloth stitching, she creates textured, emotive compositions. Her work challenges sexist and ageist narratives in Uganda’s male-dominated art scene while addressing identity, representation, and women’s roles in contemporary art, bridging tradition and modernity to foster deeper cultural connections.
